| Body 3 / Conclusion | Phản bác 2: bảo tồn sinh ra tiền (du lịch sinh thái, nghiên cứu) và là nghĩa vụ đạo đức; chốt lại lập trường. |
Conservation programmes for animals such as tigers and blue whales are expensive, and some people argue that the money would be better spent on human problems. While I understand the financial logic, I largely disagree, because protecting species is rarely a purely sentimental exercise.
The case against conservation is not absurd. Budgets are finite, and a government choosing between a new hospital wing and a whale sanctuary faces a genuine dilemma. It is also true that a handful of high-profile projects have absorbed enormous sums for limited results, particularly where habitat continues to be destroyed faster than it can be protected.
Nevertheless, this view treats wildlife as an optional luxury, which misunderstands how ecosystems work. Species do not exist in isolation: predators control the numbers of grazing animals, insects pollinate crops, and whales help sustain the ocean food chain by circulating nutrients. When a key species disappears, the resulting damage to agriculture and fisheries usually costs far more than protection would have done, so conservation is better understood as insurance against much larger losses.
There is an economic argument as well. Tiger reserves in India and whale-watching in Iceland now support thousands of jobs and bring in foreign currency that flows directly to rural communities. In addition, many modern medicines originate in wild plants and animals, and a species lost today takes its undiscovered potential with it. Beyond economics, most people would accept that a generation which drives an animal to extinction for the sake of short-term savings has failed in an obvious duty.
For these reasons I believe spending on endangered species is an investment rather than a waste, although funds should go to programmes with measurable results rather than to whichever animal happens to be fashionable.
