It is certainly true that the smartphone has become the default way for millions of people to fill their leisure hours. In my view this happens mainly because a single device now satisfies needs that once required half a dozen separate products, and on balance the trend is a positive one, provided that users set sensible limits for themselves.
There are two obvious explanations for the amount of time we spend on our phones. The first is convenience: a phone is simultaneously a television, a games console, a newspaper, a camera and a way of keeping in touch with friends, so there is rarely any reason to reach for anything else. The second is design. Social media and video platforms are algorithmically curated, which means the content that appears is calculated to hold the viewer's attention, and this makes it genuinely difficult to stop. Falling data prices and near-universal wifi have simply removed the last practical barrier.
Whether this development is welcome depends on what the time is taken from. I would argue that the benefits are substantial. People learn languages on their commute, video-call relatives living overseas and run small businesses from a handset, all of which would have been unthinkable two decades ago. The danger appears when screen time displaces exercise and face-to-face contact altogether; a teenager who spends every evening scrolling alone is clearly worse off than one who plays football twice a week.
In conclusion, the popularity of smartphones in our free time is the natural result of a device that does almost everything, and I regard it as largely beneficial. It becomes harmful only when it crowds out the physical activity and real conversation that no screen can replace.
